The Unemployment Insurance program is not the only help available to Oklahoma unemployed workers. Besides the basic UI payments there is a network of services and programs designed to help you get back to work and have the income to survive while you search for employment. This article will look at two of the main programs offered by Oklahoma’s Unemployment State Services: The Disaster Unemployment Assistance and the Oklahoma Employment and Training Program.

The Disaster Unemployment Assistance

The Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) is a program available to unemployed self-employed individuals who were working or were about to start work in an area affected by a major disaster and are not eligible for regular UI benefits. This program is not available in all states and is somewhat special in that it provides help to self-employed workers who generally do not enjoy the benefits of an unemployment insurance program.

What Requirements Must I Meet to Qualify for DUA Payments?

You must have lost your work due to a major disaster declared by the President of the United States. You must also make your claim within 30 days of the state of Oklahoma announcing the availability of the program. Also, your wages previous to applying must be similar to the wage requirements for the UI benefits program. Additionally, you must no longer have a job or be unable to reach to your job because of the effects of the disaster.

Employment and Training

Finding a new job can be especially challenging if the career you are trained for is no longer in demand or if you do not have many marketable skills. The deadline to apply for EUC benefits is January 3rd 2012.

Once you start receiving you unemployment benefits, the race is on to find suitable work before your UI benefits run out. However, once you become unemployed it can be easier said than done to find work. So, what do you do if your Oklahoma UI benefits expire? The federal government provides an Emergency Unemployment Compensation program which grants long term unemployed workers extra aid until they find work or use the available benefits.

Although the program is available in all states, not all states receive the same amount of unemployment benefits. This is because the benefits the EUC offers are linked to the unemployment rate of the sate, so states with higher unemployment rates receive more help. The system is divided into four stages which provide a maximum 53 weeks of EUC.

How Much Will I Receive in The EUC Program?

Your weekly benefit amount will  be the same as when you were under the Oklahoma UI program. The minimum weekly benefit amount in Oklahoma is $16 while the maximum is $358. However, if you continue to qualify for benefits you can receive more than the 20 weeks available in the Oklahoma UI program.

How Many Weeks Can I Receive EUC Payments For?

This depends where you live and your personal circumstances. If you are applying from Oklahoma you are eligible for up to 47 weeks. However, other states both more and less than that amount. This is because the EUC is divided into four tiers. Access to each tier and the benefits they provide is dependent on the employment rate of your state. States like Oklahoma qualify for tiers 1,2 and 3 which grants 47 weeks. Only states with an unemployment rate of 6.0 percent and higher in the last 13 weeks or with a 3-month seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 8.5 percent receive the maximum 53 weeks.

How Do I File For EUC Benefits?

In order to know if you qualify for EUC benefits you must provide the Oklahoma ESC with your Social Security Number at this webpage before your UI benefits expire. Once you provide the necessary information the website will tell you if you qualify for Tier 1 benefits with the EUC. You will need to do the same for Tier 2 and Tier 3. Notice that the last date you can apply for EUC benefits is the week of January the 3rd, 2012. You will also need to comply with similar requirements to the UI benefits program. This means you will have to be able and willing to work and actively search for work.

Oklahoma requirements for UI applicants.

Oklahoma Unemployment insurance is not for everyone. To qualify for unemployment benefits you must be an insured worker. This means your employer must be registered in the state of Oklahoma and you must meet the financial eligibility requirements set by Oklahoma UI Law. There are four key terms you must know before you can begin to understand how the Oklahoma UI benefits system works.

Base Period. Your base period is the period of time used to establish your eligibility for benefits based on your income. It includes the first four quarters of the last five since you apply for unemployment. A quarter is a three-month period. To illustrate, if you file your application in November 2011, your base period will start in April, 2010, and en in June 2011. It is the income you generate in that period that will determine if you qualify for payments.

Benefit Year. This is a period of 52 weeks which begins when you first file your application. Once your application is approved you have 52 weeks to use up your Oklahoma UI benefits. Once your benefit years ends you will not be able to use any of your benefit weeks even if you still have some left. Of course, there are other programs you can qualify for, such as the federal EUC program.

Covered Employment. This includes any type of employment under a registered employer in Oklahoma.

Weekly Benefit Amount. This is the weekly amount you receive before deductions. In Oklahoma the maximum is $409 and the minimum is $16.

When Should I File For Unemployment? As soon as you can. If you wait, you could jeopardize your chances of meeting the program’s requirements.

What Other Requirements Must I Meet?

Besides meeting the financial requirements set by Oklahoma UI Law you must also have a reason for terminating your employment which is approved by the Oklahoma ESC. In a nutshell, you must have lost your job due to no fault of your own. For example, if you voluntarily quit, are self-employed, were involved in a strike, you are not fit for work or you were sacked because of a felony or gross negligence you will not receive benefits.
